Briefly:NYC Skyline The latest meteorological observations in and around The New York City metropolitan area (NYC) at NYCMetNet, provided by the Optical Remote Sensing Laboratory of The City College of New York (ORSL).  Observations are updated every 15 minutes to better characterize meteorological conditions within the NYC urban environment.  Surface observations consist, in part, of near real-time atmospheric pressure, relative humidity, temperature, wind direction, wind speed, rain rate, and total rain accumulation measurements at building-top sites.  Upper air measurements from SODAR and radar wind profilers consist of wind speed and direction at various altitudes in near real-time.  Several weather forecast and predictive tools are also provided, such as NWS Doppler Radar maps of the extended NYC metropolitan area, NDFD forecast weather conditions for selected NYC areas, animated GOES infrared cloud cover images from our NOAA-Crest Satellite Receiving Station, and Thunderstorm Nowcasting.

Archived and current meteorological observations are gathered within the area bounded by latitudes (north) 39.0 to 41.6 degrees, and longitudes (west) -75.0 to -72.0 degrees. Data contained herein represents multiple databases of surface conditions and surface winds; upper-air winds; and satellite derived winds. All times are EST (Eastern Standard Time - Daylight Savings Time does not apply.)  From these databases, the following products are derived:

    • Surface station zoomable map displaying all available reporting stations with current meterological conditions and location.
    • Surface station zoomable map displaying all available reporting stations with current surface wind direction, magnitude and location.
    • Upper-Air station zoomable map displaying all available reporting station locations.
    • Doppler radar maps displaying precipitation including warning conditions.
  • Charts
    • Upper-Air wind speed and direction displayed by altitude at Sodar and Radar wind profiler reporting stations.
    • Animations of the upper-air wind speed and direction displayed by altitude at Sodar and Radar wind profiler reporting stations.
  • Graphs
    • Temperature, pressure, relative humidity of the last 96 hours by surface station.
    • Wind speed and direction of the last 96 hours by surface station.
  • Animations
    • Satellite IR Image loop of the extended NYC area showing cloud movement.
    • Thunderstorm Nowcast, loop of the extended NYC area showing potential storm centers.
    • Wind speed and direction of the last 96 hours by surface station.
  • Tables
    • Temperature, pressure, relative humidity of the last 96 hours by surface station.
    • Name, location, zip code and last reporting time for actively reporting stations.
  • Databases
    • Public access to historical data retrieval in tabular form for surface station sites.
    • Restricted searchable access to historical data retrieval and download for all surface station sites.

  • Forecasts
    • Selected surface station projected observations (NDFD datum) for the next forecast period.
    • Extended surface projected observations (NDFD datum) at selected stations for the next week.

In addition, many database extraction and reporting tools are available to provide data in various formats for research purposes. These tools are password controlled and available to authorized ORSL users. Some examples are graphical tools to plot and compare surface variables; windrose plotting tools to analyze directional winds at selected stations and selected times; download tools to select surface variables and stations by name, zip code or coordinate-defined boundaries.
